God's Affection for Us

Image
God's Affection for Us Twice the Affection by Teresa J. Herbic Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15, NIV Our first summer as a married couple, we visited the zoo in Topeka, Kansas.  There, we saw the cutest giraffes crossing their necks with one another. The sight, forever engraved into my mind, became the inspiration for our daughter’s room years later. We couldn’t help but think how adorable those giraffes would look painted in the corner.  I often search for bonds like that in people. Like the one I see in twins as they dress alike as young children or the unity that follows a brother and sister adopted together. Their connection is one of pure resilience. The affection that unites people and even animals, as in the case of the giraffes, can only be a gift of God's affection for us. As in the case of twins, it is a miracle. That gift is indescribable and everlasting. As we share bonds with others throughout our lives, the imprint...

Helping Abandoned Babies (of All Ages!)

Image
Nurturing the Abandoned and Helping Abandoned Babies (of all ages!) by Teresa J. Herbic (as told by adoptive parents) I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2 Born in the rural villages of northern China, Lilly was referred to our family as an older child. We felt enthused to know that we would be adopting again. Our first child, also from China, came as a real blessing. Now, we would travel again to a whole different region unknown to our family. We arrived there and the driver took us for a long arduous drive into the rural hills. This felt dissimilar to our previous trip to metropolitan Southern china. Our hotel was a dump as compared to the five-star resort we stayed in years prior. The region comprised of rundown one-room shacks and dilapidated structures stood out as impoverished and depressed. We received our daughter there a day later. It came as a shock as Lilly was covered ...

No Greater Gift Than God's Great Love

Image
No Greater Gift Than God's Great Love Yes,  No Greater Love by Teresa J. Herbic God is love. 1 John 4:8 There is no greater love than the love poured down on us from Our Heavenly Father. The sacrifice of His son as our savior and mighty king proved to be the critical act to gaining fellowship into God’s family. This example of agape love transformed history and our hearts forever. I heard a sermon once about the topic of agape love. A preacher in my small home town taught us that agape love is God’s pure love. There’s no matching it. It is the most divine, self-sacrificing and unconditional love that exists. No Greater Gift Than God's Great Love.... It’s difficult to understand this kind of love. The closest we may come as humans is in our role as parents. When your child feels down or becomes ill, our heart aches. As with most parents, we will do anything to make our children feel better and express our full devotion and support. As I think of agape love—God’s pure love—I c...

National Prayer: In God We Trust

Image
National Prayer: In God We Trust by Teresa J. Herbic He makes peace in your borders. Psalm 147:14 ESV Dear Heavenly Father, We thank You for our country. We praise You for the freedoms we have and the many blessings You have bestowed upon us. We thank You for the orphans in our foster care system and Those in urban areas in need of Your nurture and rescue. We pray for all child welfare and fostering laws To be of You and in goodwill for the children. We pray that adoptions will come swiftly to those Who wait with devoted hearts and pure desire To offer a worthy child a loving home and family. And to embody the goodness of Christ Jesus in national prayer....

Older Child Adoption: A Quiet Heart

Image
Older Child Adoption: A Quiet Heart by Teresa J. Herbic God is our refuge. Psalm 62:8, NIV Sometimes we pour out our hearts to God crying out for an answer. Vienna found herself at an orphanage by age six. Her mom couldn’t care for her due to major alcohol and drug addictions. As years went by, Vienna felt utterly rejected and quietly lived in turmoil. Awaiting the hope for an older child adoption, she often witnessed babies and toddlers being adopted from the institution. She couldn’t grasp why older children like her are not being adopted. Finally, one day, the walls came crashing down. She had all she could take of this feeling of being unloved and unwanted. She sobbed uncontrollably to God in despair. “God, why won’t you answer when I ask for a home? Why must I spend my life here in the orphanage? I seek You and take refuge in You. I beg of You, please God, hear my prayer!” In the days that followed, the orphanage director called Vienna to the office. He informed her a...
