Older Child Adoption: A Quiet Heart

by Teresa J. Herbic
God is our refuge. Psalm 62:8, NIV

Sometimes we pour out our hearts to God crying out for an answer. Vienna found herself at an orphanage by age six. Her mom couldn’t care for her due to major alcohol and drug addictions. As years went by, Vienna felt utterly rejected and quietly lived in turmoil.

Awaiting the hope for an older child adoption, she often witnessed babies and toddlers being adopted from the institution. She couldn’t grasp why older children like her are not being adopted. Finally, one day, the walls came crashing down. She had all she could take of this feeling of being unloved and unwanted. She sobbed uncontrollably to God in despair. “God, why won’t you answer when I ask for a home? Why must I spend my life here in the orphanage? I seek You and take refuge in You. I beg of You, please God, hear my prayer!”

In the days that followed, the orphanage director called Vienna to the office. He informed her about a family wanting to adopt an older child. They had their hearts set on Vienna. In the silent moment that followed, her eyes filled with tears in amazement. “God, thank You,” she thought repeatedly in her head. Then, she took one look at the orphanage director and replied, “Yes! Yes! I want them to be my family!”

Today, Vienna lives with a quiet spirit, only this time it’s one filled with joy and contentment. She loves her mom and dad and is so happy they have taught her to know more about Jesus.

Thank You Lord for adoption in general and for older child adoption. Thank You for being our safe refuge and the answer to all of our prayers.
